SMP Pre-Treatment/ Aftercare Instructions

So you're ready to take the plunge and try SMP for yourself! Here's everything you'll need to know to ensure the best results before and after your SMP service.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

Prior to your appointment

  • No sun exposure 3-5 days before the treatment (wear a hat if needed) - this is to avoid skin being sunburnt or sensitized from the sun.

  • If your scalp is feeling dry, use a water-based moisturiser for a few days to help hydrate the skin. If it's really dry, flaky and irritated we may not be able to do the procedure or it may take a couple more sessions to get the desired result.

  • No minoxidil or steroid creams on the scalp for 72 hours prior to treatment.

  • Wash hair the day before treatment.

  • Wig units should be removed 7 days prior to treatment to give the scalp time to breath and clear up irritations to glue.

  • If your are receiving a shaved head SMP treatment, please make sure your hair is trimmed to a 0.5 length. If you straight razor your hair, please refrain from shaving for a couple days to allow hair follicles to be visible (this allows us to properly match the pigment and needle size to your hair follicles.)

Day of your appointment

  • Arrive with clean dried hair

  • If your are receiving a density treatment, arrive with your hair styled (without any product) the way you plan your wear your hair going forward.

  • Get some rest and make sure to eat before your appointment. You’ll be much more sensitive if you’re tired, hungry or worse - hungover!

  • It’s a good idea to wear black or dark colours as we are working with black ink that could potentially splatter or stain clothing.

  • If you are prone to keloid scarring or have any active and changing forms of Alopecia unfortunately Scalp Micropigmentation will not be suitable for you.

  • We will not be able to treat clients who are undergoing chemotherapy or have undergone chemotherapy within the last 12 months due to the radiation and it’s possible effects on the pigment settling.

  • Type 2 diabetes: You will need a doctor’s clearance to proceed due to being at higher risk of infection and use of certain medications.

  • Any use of blood thinning medication must be complete for 30 days before treatment commences. Use of antibiotics must be complete for 7 days before starting treatment.

  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding. All clients must be over 18+.

  • If you are unsure about your general health or are experiencing abnormal scalp conditions, it is recommended to get a doctor’s clearance before treatment commences.

Aftercare Instructions

Day 1-4 Post Treatment

  • No excessive sweating for a minimum of 2-4 days after sessions.

  • DO NOT expose the scalp to strong sunlight while healing, minimum of 7 days.

  • Do not fully submerge scalp in water for a minimum of 4 days post treatment. (You can shower with a shower cap on or shower normally without keeping your head directly under the water.)

  • Styling is permitted as long as it does not pull or irritate the scalp.

  • Do not submerge your head in chlorinated water, or use steam rooms or saunas for a minimum of 7 days.

  • You may experience pigment shedding during this period - small scab-like dots which shed from the skin. This is a completely normal part of the healing process. Do not scratch or pick as this may cause the pigment to be pulled out.

  • Loose fitting hats or work hardhats may be worn after treatment and during healing but it’s important to let the skin breathe whenever possible during healing. Beanies or tight hats causing friction or sweating must not be worn for a minimum of 5 days post treatment.

  • On day 4 post treatment you may gently wash your hair as normal again, with WARM water, and no scrubbing. Follow up by moisturizing the scalp with a water based lotion or very light natural oil such as jojoba.

Day 8-14 Post Treatment

  • Do NOT apply chemical based colours, fibres, makeup, antibiotic creams, ointments, Minoxidil or Retinol to the treated area until it is fully healed. (Minimum 10 days.)

  • Do not expose the scalp to long periods of strong sunlight while healing. Stay out of strong sunlight during the initial 7-10 day settling period to avoid having to use sunscreen on the treatment area, and instead wear a hat. It is important not to sunburn the scalp to the point that would cause peeling, especially within the first 2 weeks following treatment.

  • Any sun damage which causes peeling on the healing tattoo can lead to fading and uneven treatment results. This includes after treatment is fully healed.

  • Do not rub, pick or scratch the treated area or scabbing that may appear, as this may cause uneven healing and the impressions to be less crisp. Gently tap if you experience itching.

  • Keep the scalp moisturized with a water based moisturiser or light oil once your treatment has settled. This will help to keep the scalp in good condition & helps to extend the longevity of the SMP.

Day 15 Post Treatment

  • Resume your routine as normal.

Long-Term Aftercare

  • Exfoliate your scalp at least 2 times a month to remove dead skin cells and maintain the appearance of the pigments.

  • Avoid chlorinated pools, saltwater, saunas, and steam rooms for 3 week after treatment

  • Always wear SPF 50+ as UV rays can cause the pigment to fade.

  • Avoid using products that use a high concentration of alcohol. To tell how much alcohol is in a product check the label. On the labels, ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. If alcohol is one of the first ingredients it is best to avoid it.

  • Avoid products with AHA as this will cause pigment to fade.
