Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions should you expect?

While the number of sessions varies from person to person, most clients will need roughly 3-4 sessions to complete their SMP looks. Your first SMP session acts as a baseline/shadow and the following sessions add in dimension by adding smaller and more defined dots. The amount of sessions needed will also vary depending on your desired outcome and level of hair loss. A fully bald head may need more sessions than a density treatment or scar camouflage.

What should you avoid doing after scalp micropigmentation?

After your SMP treatment, you should avoid any sun exposure for the first 7 days to reduce the risk of a sunburn, peeling or improper healing. You should also avoid fully submerging the scalp in water for 2-3 days and avoid chlorinated water for 7 days. Do not pick, rub or scratch at the area as this will disrupt the healing process and could impact the look of your healed SMP. Click here to view all pre-treatment and aftercare instructions.

What precautions should be taken for scalp micropigmentation?

Sun exposure should be avoided 3-5 days prior to your SMP appointment. If the skin is damaged or a sunburn is present, the session will need to be rescheduled to allow the skin to heal. All skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis should be resolved prior to your SMP treatment, as they will impact the healing process of the SMP.

If you have had a hair transplant treatment, you will need to wait 12 months before receiving an SMP treatment to protect the longevity of your transplant. Additionally all scars must be fully healed 6-12 months before any scar camouflage treatments. Click here to learn more about Pre-Treatment Instructions.

Will my SMP be noticeable?

In most cases, SMP is virtually undetectable to casual observers when done properly. The pigment dots are strategically placed and shaded to blend seamlessly with your existing hair and skin colour. This creates the illusion of a well-groomed buzz cut or a closely cropped hairstyle.

How long does SMP take to settle?

SMP takes roughly 7 days to settle but may take up to one month. For this reason, the second session can be booked anywhere from 7-14 days depending on the rate of healing for each client, and the final sessions are generally booked one month after the second session.

Can I wear a hat after SMP?

You may wear a hat after your SMP treatment, however tight fitting hats like hard hats and beanies should be avoided during the healing process as they don’t allow the scalp to breathe and this may lead to sweat and harbouring bacteria.
